Creston Veterinary Hospital is looking for additional Veterinarians to join our growing team. We are an Emergency Mixed Animal practice that has been serving Creston and additional surrounding rural communities for 47 years. Our facility is fully equipped with an in-house laboratory and pharmacy, digital radiology (including a dental and portable unit), medical-grade laser, ultrasound (in house and portable) as well as a full array of large and small animal surgical equipment. We acknowledge the value of a work/life balance and ensure that the workload is shared fairly and evenly among team members by maintaining a rotating on-call/emergency schedule. Open Position: Veterinary Assistant
Creston Veterinary Hospital is seeking a compassionate animal lover to fill a full-time position as a Veterinary Assistant in our busy mixed animal/emergency practice. Here, you’ll play a vital role in bringing comfort to our furry, feathered, and scaled patients and ensuring our facility’s smooth running.

The primary responsibility of a Veterinary Assistant is to support our veterinarians, technicians, and client care team in their daily tasks by assisting with patient exams, diagnostics, treatment, surgery, and nursing care, as well as ensuring that our equipment, facility, and hospital grounds are kept clean, inviting and odor-free.

Candidates best suited for the position of Veterinary Assistant have a passion for helping animals and their people. They are calm professionals who learn quickly, multi-task, and have the innate ability to anticipate what’s next, all while paying close attention to detail. They possess exceptional organizational, communication, and customer service skills and embrace flexibility in fast-paced, ever-evolving environments. The ideal candidate is a lifelong learner who can meet the job’s physical demands and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Working independently is essential; however, the success of our profession is the collaborative result of our positive, passionate, and dedicated team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (the following job description does not necessarily cover every task or duty that might be assigned):

  • Willing to work with both companion and large animals.
  • Willing to work in-clinic and on location in all weather conditions.
  • Tend to hospitalized patients (weigh, provide food, water, and medication, monitor intravenous lines, clean and disinfect kennels and litter boxes, refresh bedding and give extra snuggles).
  • Restrain, handle, exercise, and bathe patients.
  • Carefully observe and record physical and behavioural changes in animals.
  • Sooth and care for injured or frightened animals that may occasionally lash out.
  • Prepare and sterilize the surgical suite, exam rooms, lab, dental and treatment areas.
  • Sanitize surgical instruments and wrap surgical packs for sterilization.
  • Assist in sample collection and preparation (blood, urine, feces, and other bodily fluids).
  • Assist with in-house lab diagnostics and complete referral requisitions.
  • Assist with X-Rays.
  • Assist Veterinarians and Technicians with various treatments and procedures including exams, anesthetic monitoring, unsightly medical operations, emergencies and euthanasia.
  • Show emotional strength, stability and maturity in cases where they must assist in treating abused animals or euthanizing those who cannot be returned to a reasonable quality of life.
  • Welcome clients and communicate with them in a friendly and informative manner over the phone, email or in-person.
  • Identify and work compassionately and patiently with clients in various emotional states.
  • Assist with admitting and discharging surgical and hospitalized patients.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in paper/electronic medical records.
  • Maintain client, patient and hospital confidentiality.
  • Relay appropriate information to/from clients to doctors, technicians, reception and/or management.
  • Generalized housekeeping and hospital maintenance, inside and out (sanitization, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, laundry, dishes, recycling, garbage, poo and snow removal, etc).
  • Assist with accurate counts and restocking of inventory.
  • Clean, sanitize and maintain medical equipment in pristine working order.
  • Computer skills: sound knowledge of Windows-based computer systems, word processing, email, web search, and other skills needed to effectively use the practice management software program and perform clerical and administrative work as needed. Experience with Cornerstone veterinary software is an asset.
  • Drive to/from house and farm calls and transport patients as required.

Qualifications:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certificate from a Veterinary Medical Assistant program (preferred).
  • 1 year of customer service job-related experience (preferred).
  • Basic math and writing skills.
  • Clean, valid Class 5 driver’s license with reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to safely restrain patients and lift inventory upwards of 50 pounds.

Job Type & Schedule:

  • Permanent, full-time.
  • Must be available to work some evening, weekend, holiday, and overtime hours.
  • Punctuality and reliability are expected.

Open Position: Receptionist

Creston Veterinary Hospital is looking for a full-time and part-time Receptionist to join our animal care team in our rapidly growing mixed animal and emergency practice.

In this administrative role, you check-in our animal patients, update their records and owner information, schedule appointments, process payments, and liaise between hospital departments. You may also be asked to help prepare prescriptions or provide home-care instructions to pet owners. Our reception team members must possess excellent problem-solving and organizational skills, compassion, a positive attitude, fine attention to detail, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Punctuality and professionalism, and computer skills are expected.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Check-in animal patients while gathering and certifying pet and owner information
  • Answer and triage a high volume of phone calls from clients on a multi-line system while identifying and work compassionately with clients in various emotional states.
  • Receiving and transferring medical records between hospitals and specialty practices.
  • Maintain proper client and patient documentation in paper/electronic medical records.
  • Fill prescriptions with exceptional attention to detail and explain instructions for use.
  • Create computerized invoices and process payment and pet insurance transactions.
  • Create daily reports and prepare bank deposits.
  • Assist Inventory Manager with receiving, unpacking deliveries and restocking.
  • Maintain the order and cleanliness of the reception area and assist in preparing exam rooms between appointments.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least one year of customer service job-related experience.
  • Must be able to restrain patients and lift inventory upwards of 30 pounds safely.
  • Basic math and writing skills.
  • Available to work some evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Computer skills: must be proficient in Microsoft Windows, email, web search, and other skills needed to use the practice management software effectively. Cornerstone software experience is preferred but not required.

Open Position: Receptionist Assistant

Creston Veterinary Hospital is looking for a new Part/Full-time team member to join our rapidly growing mixed animal/emergency practice!

The primary role of the Reception Assistant will be to interact with clients, provide curbside assistance, maintain a daily cleaning and disinfecting schedule, and uphold high standards of sanitation within the clinic, run errands, and liaise with multiple hospital departments.

The ideal Reception Assistant must be physically fit, have a positive attitude, be compassionate, demonstrate excellent organizational skills and fine attention to detail, multitask effectively and possess superior communication and teamwork skills.

Punctuality and professionalism are expected.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in customer service and those with a background working with animals. Experience in a Veterinary Hospital is an asset but is not mandatory for the position.

This position is an excellent opportunity for new graduates interested in developing their customer service skills and exploring the everyday tasks of veterinary professionals!
